Summer Starts on the Farm

June, the official start of summer. School is almost out, the weather is getting warmer, and vacations are starting to get planned. Here on the farm, June means time to plant our gourds. This past week, we actually got the first ones in the ground. This year we are planting approximately 25 acres of gourds and about 100 different varieties. Last year’s crop is in and the raw gourd selection in our retail store and online is at its prime.

I know summer is only starting but there is nothing wrong with a little planning for when the kids get bored or we are having one of those summer storms to cool off the temperature and we must all be inside. Our raw birdhouses or craft kits are a great idea to have on hand for those kinds of days. Remember you can use any paint you have lying around the house to paint your gourd with and it’s a great way for your kids to be creative and keep them occupied for at least a little bit.

If you have friends and family visiting for a few days this summer, pack a lunch and eat at the picnic tables across the street from the store surrounded by the beauty of our farm and the Blue Mountains. If you come on a Tuesday, we will still be holding our public tours every Tuesday at 2:00pm. Here you get to see our crafting teams hard at work. Get an up close and personal view of how we craft each one of our gourds and all the steps that go into each gourd design.

Towards the end of month on Saturday, June 29th from 10:00-3:00, we will be holding a special Patriotic Themed Walk In Class at the farm. Projects are still being created but if you want to know what designs are decided on, sign up for our email newsletter at You do not need to register for this class and all ages and artistic ability is welcome.

I will be gone the last week of June for my vacation and like many of you that have getaways planned, I am looking forward to some relaxation and quality time with my family. I hope you all have a great summer, safe travels and gourdeous weather wherever you go.

Until next month,
